Youngstown State University, also known as YSU or Youngstown State, is a public university situated in Youngstown, Ohio, United States. It was established in 1908 and is part of the University System of Ohio. The university's athletic teams, called the Penguins, participate in Division I of the NCAA. Youngstown State University is a member of the Horizon League for most varsity sports, except for football, which competes in the Football Championship Subdivision of the NCAA as part of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Bowling competes in the Southland Bowling League, and lacrosse competes in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The university boasts a wide-ranging alumni network spread across the nation and beyond.
