Wilkes University, located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, is a distinguished private institution. With a rich history dating back to its founding in 1933 as a satellite campus of Bucknell University, Wilkes College, as it was then known, gained its independence in 1947. The college was named after the renowned English radical politician John Wilkes, who also inspired the naming of Wilkes-Barre. In recognition of its academic excellence and growth, Wilkes College was granted university status in January 1990. Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Wilkes University is classified among "Doctoral/Professional Universities." The university takes pride in its distinctive mascot, a Colonel, and its official colors, blue and yellow. The campus symbol, a letter "W" known as the "flying W," holds special significance for students and alumni.
