The University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW–Madison or simply Madison) is a public land-grant research university located in Madison, Wisconsin. Established in 1848 when Wisconsin achieved statehood, UW–Madison is the official state university of Wisconsin and the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System. It became a land-grant institution in 1866. the university had research and development expenditures of $1.4 billion, ranking eighth among U.S. universities.
