The University of South Alabama (USA) is a public research university located in Mobile, Alabama. Established in May 1963 by the Alabama Legislature, it replaced existing extension programs offered by the University of Alabama in Mobile. The university held its first classes in June 1964 and conducted its inaugural commencement ceremony in June 1967. USA comprises ten colleges and schools, including one of Alabama's state-supported medical schools. It is classified as an "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity" institution. Additionally, USA is recognized as the second-largest employer in Mobile, boasting an annual payroll exceeding $400 million and employing over 6,000 individuals. The university also claims to have a significant annual economic impact of US$3 billion.
