The University of Minnesota, formally known as the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, is a public land-grant research university located in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States. The University of Minnesota originated with a charter drafted by the Minnesota Territorial Legislature in 1851, seven years before Minnesota achieved statehood. Currently, the university is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." It is a member of the Association of American Universities and ranks 20th in research activity, with $1.04 billion in research and development expenditures in the fiscal year 2020.
