The University of Maryland, College Park, also known as UMD or Maryland, is a public research university located in College Park, Maryland. It was established in 1856 and is considered the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland. UMD is recognized as the largest university in both the state and the Washington metropolitan area. It consists of 12 schools and colleges, offering a wide range of degree programs. The university is a member of the Association of American Universities and competes in intercollegiate athletics as part of the Big Ten Conference. UMD is known for its high research activity and has been designated as a "Public Ivy". In 2016, the University of Maryland, College Park, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore formed a strategic partnership to enhance their medical, scientific, and educational programs, as well as increase research grants and joint faculty appointments.
