Tulane University, officially the Tulane University of Louisiana, is a private research university located in New Orleans, Louisiana. Founded in 1834 as the Medical College of Louisiana by seven young medical doctors, it became the University of Louisiana, a comprehensive public university, in 1847. The institution transitioned to private status through the endowments of Paul Tulane and Josephine Louise Newcomb in 1884 and 1887, respectively.
