ABOUT UNIVERSITY

New York University

New York University (NYU) is a private research university located in New York City. It was chartered in 1831 by the New York State Legislature and founded in 1832 by a group of New Yorkers led by Albert Gallatin. The university was established as a non-denominational all-male institution near City Hall, with a curriculum focused on secular education. In 1833, NYU moved its main campus to Greenwich Village, which surrounds Washington Square Park. Over time, the university expanded by adding an engineering school in Brooklyn's MetroTech Center and graduate schools throughout Manhattan. NYU has a notable list of faculty and alumni, including Nobel Laureates, Turing Award winners, Fields Medalists, MacArthur Fellows, Pulitzer Prize winners, heads of state, U.S. Supreme Court justices, U.S. governors, mayors of New York City, members of Congress, Federal Reserve Chairmen, Academy Award winners, Emmy Award winners, Tony Award winners, Grammy Award winners, billionaires, and Olympic medalists. It is classified as an "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity."
