Montana Technological University, also known as Montana Tech, is situated in Butte, Montana. It was founded in 1900 as the Montana State School of Mines and later became affiliated with the University of Montana in 1994. Over the years, the university underwent various name changes. In 2017, the Montana University System Board of Regents classified Montana Tech as part of Special Focus Four-Year Universities, making it the sole university in the Montana University System with such a designation. Consequently, in 2018, the university officially changed its name from Montana Tech of the University of Montana to Montana Technological University to reflect its increased autonomy.
