James Madison University, also known as JMU or Madison, is a well-established university located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. With a rich history dating back to its founding in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg, the institution has undergone several name changes over the years. It was initially renamed Madison College in 1938 to pay tribute to President James Madison, and later in 1977, it became James Madison University. The university is classified as "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".
