Iowa State University of Science and Technology, also known as Iowa State University or ISU, is located in Ames, Iowa. It was established in 1858 as the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm. The university became one of the first land-grant institutions in the United States when the Iowa Legislature accepted the provisions of the 1862 Morrill Act. This made Iowa the first state to do so. In 1959, the college was officially renamed Iowa State University of Science and Technology. Iowa State is classified as an "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity" institution.
