About University
George Mason University, also known as George Mason, Mason, or GMU, is a public research university located in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was originally established in 1949 as a regional branch of the University of Virginia and gained independence as a university in 1972. The university has campuses in Fairfax, Arlington, Front Royal, and Prince William Counties, as well as a retreat and conference center in Lorton and an international campus in Incheon, South Korea. The main campus is situated in Fairfax, Virginia. George Mason University is classified as "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." The university has had two professors, James M. Buchanan and Vernon L. Smith, who received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics during their time at the university. The Fairfax campus is home to EagleBank Arena, a 10,000-seat arena and concert venue. George Mason University has a vibrant student community with numerous student groups and a variety of fraternities and sororities.
