George Mason University, also known as George Mason, Mason, or GMU, is a public research university located in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was originally established in 1949 as a regional branch of the University of Virginia and gained independence as a university in 1972. The university has campuses in Fairfax, Arlington, Front Royal, and Prince William Counties, as well as a retreat and conference center in Lorton and an international campus in Incheon, South Korea.
