About University

The Florida Institute of Technology, also known as Florida Tech or FIT, is a private research university located in Melbourne, Florida. It is comprised of four academic colleges, namely Engineering & Science, Aeronautics, Psychology & Liberal Arts, and Business. The College of Engineering & Science is the most popular among students, with approximately half of FIT's student population enrolled in this college. The university's main residential campus covers an area of 130 acres and is conveniently situated near the Melbourne Orlando International Airport and the Florida Tech Research Park. It is also in close proximity to the Patrick Space Force Base, being only 16 miles away. Originally established in 1958 as Brevard Engineering College, the institution's primary objective was to offer advanced education to professionals employed in the U.S. space program at the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. In 1966, it merged with the Institute of Technology (FIT) following the University of Central Florida's name change, resulting in its current name, Florida Tech. Florida Tech had a total of 5,693 on-campus students in 2021, which includes students at the Melbourne Campus, Melbourne Sites, and Education Centers. Additionally, there were 3,623 students enrolled in online programs, with a relatively equal distribution between graduate and undergraduate students. The university places a strong emphasis on engineering and the sciences. It is classified as an "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity."
