Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), commonly known as Florida A&M, is a public historically black land-grant university located in Tallahassee, Florida. Founded in 1887, it is the only public historically black university in Florida. FAMU is a member institution of the State University System of Florida and is one of the state's land-grant universities. The university is accredited to award baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. FAMU's sports teams are known as the Rattlers and compete in Division I of the NCAA. They are a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The university is classified as "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".
