About University

Dartmouth College, located in Hanover, New Hampshire, is a private Ivy League research university. It was established in 1769 by Eleazar Wheelock, making it one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. Originally, Dartmouth was founded to educate Native Americans in Christian theology and the English way of life. However, it later shifted its focus to training Congregationalist ministers before gradually becoming more secular. During the early 1900s, Dartmouth gained national prominence and was considered the most prestigious undergraduate college in the United States. Although it has since evolved into a research university, Dartmouth continues to emphasize its commitment to undergraduate education by retaining the name "Dartmouth College." Dartmouth offers a liberal arts curriculum and provides undergraduate instruction in various academic departments and interdisciplinary programs. Students can choose from 60 majors in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. They also have the opportunity to design specialized concentrations or participate in dual degree programs. In addition to its undergraduate programs, Dartmouth has four professional and graduate schools: the Geisel School of Medicine, the Thayer School of Engineering, the Tuck School of Business, and the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies. The university is affiliated with the Dartmouth–Hitchcock Medical Center and is home to several notable centers and institutions, including the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences, the Hood Museum of Art, the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding, and the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Dartmouth's main campus spans 269 acres and is situated on a terrace above the Connecticut River. The university operates on a quarter system, with four ten-week academic terms throughout the year. Dartmouth is known for its strong focus on undergraduate education, vibrant Greek culture, and cherished campus traditions. Its 34 varsity sports teams compete in the Ivy League conference of the NCAA Division I. Dartmouth boasts an impressive list of alumni, including numerous members of the United States Congress, U.S. governors, billionaires, U.S. Cabinet secretaries, Nobel Prize laureates, U.S. Supreme Court justices, and a U.S. vice president. It has also produced 81 Rhodes Scholars, 26 Marshall Scholarship recipients, 13 Pulitzer Prize recipients, 10 CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, and 51 Olympic medalists. It is classified as an "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity."
