Coastal Carolina University, commonly known as CCU or Coastal, is located in Conway, South Carolina. It was established in 1954 as Coastal Carolina Junior College and later became a part of the University of South Carolina System under the name USC Coastal Carolina. However, in 1993, it gained independence and became its own entity. One unique aspect of the university is its designation as a national sea-grant institution. Additionally, CCU owns a portion of Waties Island, which is an Atlantic barrier island. This island serves as a natural laboratory for CCU's instruction and research activities. Moreover, the campus is home to the Horry County Schools Scholars Academy, a prestigious high school that caters to gifted students.
