Clark University is a private research university located in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was established in 1887 through a generous endowment from Jonas Gilman Clark, a prominent businessman. As one of the first modern research universities in the United States, Clark initially focused on graduate education. However, it started admitting undergraduate students in 1902, and women were welcomed in 1942. The university offers a wide range of academic programs in various disciplines, including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. Students have the flexibility to design their own specialized majors and participate in pre-professional programs. Clark University is a member of the Higher Education Consortium of Central Massachusetts, allowing students to take courses at other nearby institutions. It is also classified as an "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity" institution. While it was a founding member of the Association of American Universities, Clark University decided to withdraw from the association in 1999. The university's athletic teams, known as the Clark Cougars, compete in 17 NCAA Division III varsity sports and are part of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Throughout its history, Clark University has produced accomplished individuals, including business executives and inventors of notable advancements such as the wind chill factor and the birth control pill.
