Central Michigan University (CMU) is a public research university located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. It was established in 1892 as the Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute, originally functioning as a private normal school. The governance of the school was later taken over by the Michigan State Board of Education, leading to its transformation into a state institution and renaming it Central State Normal School in 1895. In 1959, under the presidency of Judson W. Foust, the institution achieved university status and adopted its current name, Central Michigan University. CMU is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity" and is one of the eight research universities in Michigan. It offers a wide range of academic programs at the undergraduate, master's, specialist, and doctoral levels. These programs encompass various fields, including entrepreneurship, journalism, music, audiology, teacher education, psychology, and physician assistant. The School of Engineering and Technology at CMU provides ABET-accredited programs in mechanical, electrical, computer, and environmental engineering. Additionally, CMU's College of Medicine was established in the fall of 2013. The university's athletic teams, known as the Central Michigan Chippewas, compete in the NCAA Division I Mid-American Conference. They participate in six men's and ten women's sports.
