California Lutheran University (CLU or Cal Lutheran) is a private university located in Thousand Oaks, California. Established in 1959, the university is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America but is nonsectarian. Originally founded as California Lutheran College in 1960, it became California's first four-year liberal arts college and the inaugural four-year private college in Ventura County. On January 1, 1986, the institution changed its name to California Lutheran University. Situated on a 290-acre campus, 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles, Cal Lutheran offers a range of degrees at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, along with post-master's and post-bachelor's certificates. The university provides a variety of academic programs and opportunities for students to pursue their passions and interests.
