ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Brigham Young University

Brigham Young University (BYU) is a private research university located in Provo, Utah. It was established in 1875 under the guidance of religious leader Brigham Young and is sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). BYU offers a diverse range of academic programs in areas such as liberal arts, engineering, agriculture, management, physical and mathematical sciences, nursing, and law. The university is organized into 11 colleges or schools at its main Provo campus. It also maintains satellite campuses in Jerusalem, Salt Lake City, Washington, D.C., and London. BYU is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. BYU students predominantly belong to the LDS Church and adhere to an honor code that reflects the church's teachings. This honor code encompasses academic honesty, dress and grooming standards, and behavioral guidelines. The university places emphasis on missionary service, and a significant portion of BYU students have lived outside the United States. Many students are proficient in a second language, and the university offers instruction in 63 languages. The athletic teams at BYU are known as the BYU Cougars. They compete in NCAA Division I, primarily in the Big 12 Conference. The men's volleyball team participates in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Over the years, BYU's sports teams have achieved numerous championships, both within and outside of the NCAA. In 2021, BYU officially joined the Big 12 Conference and will begin conference play in the 2023-24 school year. The university is classified as "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".
