Brandeis University is a private research university located in Waltham, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1948 on the grounds of the former Middlesex University. The university was established as a non-sectarian, coeducational institution with sponsorship from the Jewish community. The name of the university honors Louis Brandeis, who was the first Jewish Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Brandeis University has been a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) since 1985 and is classified as "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." It is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. The campus spans 235 acres and had a total enrollment of 5,800 students in 2018.
