Bellarmine University (BU) is a private Catholic university located in Louisville, Kentucky. It was established in 1950 by Archbishop John A. Floersh of the Archdiocese of Louisville and was named after Saint Robert Bellarmine. The university changed its name to Bellarmine University in 2000. Bellarmine University is organized into seven colleges and schools and offers a wide range of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. It is classified as a "D/PU: Doctoral/Professional University." The university has a main campus in Louisville's Belknap neighborhood, spanning 135 acres. Bellarmine's athletic teams, known as the Knights, compete in NCAA Division I and the ASUN Conference, with a few exceptions in certain sports. The men's basketball team at Bellarmine University achieved a significant milestone by winning the 2011 NCAA Men's Division II Basketball Tournament, which was the university's first athletic national championship.
