École polytechnique, known as Polytechnique or l'X, is a prestigious institution located in Palaiseau, France. It has a rich history, being founded in 1794 during the French Revolution by mathematician Gaspard Monge. Under Napoleon I, the school was militarized in 1804 and it continues to be supervised by the French Ministry of Armed Forces. Originally situated in the Latin Quarter in central Paris, École polytechnique moved to Palaiseau in 1976, where it is now part of the Paris-Saclay technology cluster. The school's engineering graduate program is highly selective, with a rigorous admission process involving written and oral examinations. French engineering students also undergo initial military training and hold the status of paid officer cadets. In addition to the engineering program, École polytechnique has been awarding doctorates since 1985, masters since 2005, and bachelors since 2017. Graduates from École polytechnique have achieved great success in various fields. Many go on to become top executives in companies, senior civil servants, military officers, or researchers. The list of notable alumni is impressive, including three Nobel Prize winners, a Fields Medalist, three Presidents of France, and numerous CEOs of French and international companies. The institution has produced renowned mathematicians like Cauchy, Coriolis, Henri Poincaré, Laurent Schwartz, and Benoît Mandelbrot, as well as physicists such as Becquerel, Carnot, Ampère, and Fresnel. Economists Maurice Allais and Jean Tirole are also among the distinguished alumni. Furthermore, French Marshals Joffre, Foch, Fayolle, and Maunoury all graduated from École polytechnique's engineering program.
