The University of Ottawa is a bilingual public research university located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It was established in 1848 as the College of Bytown and later renamed the College of Ottawa in 1861. The university received university status in 1866 through a royal charter and a pontifical charter in 1889. It is a member of the Canadian U15 group of research-intensive universities.
