The University of Ottawa is a bilingual public research university located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It was established in 1848 as the College of Bytown and later renamed the College of Ottawa in 1861. The university received university status in 1866 through a royal charter and a pontifical charter in 1889. It is a member of the Canadian U15 group of research-intensive universities. The university has a diverse student population, including a significant number of international students from 150 countries. The university also boasts a large network of alumni. The university's athletic teams are known as the Gee-Gees and participate in U Sports.
