The University of Calgary, also known as U of C or UCalgary, is a public research university located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It was initially established in 1944 as the Calgary branch of the University of Alberta, which was founded in 1908. However, in 1966, it became an independent university. The university consists of 14 faculties and numerous research institutes and centers. Its main campus is situated in the northwest quadrant of the city near the Bow River, while there is a smaller south campus in the city center. The main campus covers a significant area of approximately 200 hectares (490 acres) and houses most of the research facilities. The University of Calgary is a member of the U15, which represents some of Canada's leading research universities. It has strong ties to the petroleum and geoscience industry through its Department of Geosciences and the Schulich School of Engineering. Additionally, the university offers various departments and faculties, including the Cumming School of Medicine, the Faculty of Arts, the School of Public Policy, the Faculty of Law, and the Haskayne School of Business.
