The University of Alberta, commonly referred to as U of A or UAlberta, is a public research university situated in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was established in 1908 by Alexander Cameron Rutherford, the first premier of Alberta, and Henry Marshall Tory, the inaugural president of the university. The university operates under the Post-secondary Learning Act and is recognized as a "comprehensive academic and research university" (CARU). It offers a diverse range of academic and professional programs leading to undergraduate and graduate-level credentials. The University of Alberta plays a significant role in Alberta's economy, making a substantial contribution of $19.4 billion in 2022, which accounts for more than five percent of the province's gross domestic product for that year. Notable achievements of the university include the graduation of over 260,000 individuals and the recognition of its alumni and faculty members through prestigious awards such as 3 Nobel Prizes and 72 Rhodes Scholarships.
